THE FACTS

What is Menopausal Acne?

Menopausal acne is a common yet often overlooked symptom that can occur during perimenopause and menopause, typically beginning in a woman's 40s or earlier. As hormone levels fluctuate during this transition, many women experience a variety of symptoms, including hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, low mood, anxiety, reduced sex drive, and concentration issues. Among these, acne breakouts can be particularly surprising and distressing.

The hormonal changes during menopause, similar to those experienced during puberty, can disrupt the skin’s natural balance, leading to breakouts. These blemishes usually appear on the cheeks and jawline and can take the form of pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, or cysts. Even women undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can experience acne due to the hormone progestin, which can also trigger breakouts.

The primary cause of menopausal acne is the imbalance in hormone levels, particularly the decline in estrogen and the relative increase in androgens (male sex hormones). This imbalance can lead to increased oil production and clogged pores. Additionally, factors like stress and nutritional deficiencies can further exacerbate the condition by affecting cortisol and insulin levels, which also influence skin health.

It's important to understand that experiencing acne during this stage is completely normal and usually temporary, resolving as hormone levels stabilize. However, managing these breakouts can be challenging.

To help combat menopausal acne and restore your skin’s natural balance, we recommend incorporating our specially formulated cleanser, serum, and moisturiser into your skincare routine. These products are designed to gently cleanse, hydrate, and protect your skin, helping you achieve a clearer, more radiant complexion.
