THE FACTS

What is Dull Skin?

Dull skin refers to a lack of radiance or brightness, making the complexion appear tired, uneven, and lifeless. This condition is often characterised by a rough texture, dryness, and a lack of natural glow. During menopause, dull skin becomes a common issue due to several physiological changes in the body.

Hormonal Changes: The decline in estrogen levels during menopause significantly impacts skin health. Estrogen helps maintain skin hydration, elasticity, and cell turnover. When estrogen levels drop, the skin's ability to renew itself slows down, leading to an accumulation of dead skin cells on the surface.

Decreased Oil Production: As estrogen decreases, sebaceous glands produce less oil, leading to drier skin. This lack of natural oil can result in a rough, flaky texture that lacks radiance.

Slower Cell Turnover: The skin's natural exfoliation process slows down during menopause, causing dead skin cells to build up on the skin's surface. This buildup can make the skin appear dull and uneven.

Environmental Factors: Exposure to UV rays, pollution, and other environmental aggressors can cause oxidative stress and damage the skin. Over time, this leads to a dull, tired-looking complexion.

Dehydration: The skin's ability to retain moisture decreases with age, and menopause exacerbates this issue. Dehydrated skin often looks dull and lackluster.

Lifestyle Factors: Poor diet, lack of sleep, and stress can also contribute to dull skin during menopause. These factors affect overall skin health and can intensify the visible signs of aging.
